Top tips for designing your bespoke bridalwear

So, your big day is fast approaching and you’re yet to find your dress? Perhaps you already have a very specific idea of what you want and there isn’t anything out there that lives up to your vision, or maybe you’ve found elements of different dresses that you like, but not one single dress ticks all the boxes.

Here’s why going down the bespoke route could be the answer to finding your dream dress, as well as offering some handy tips and what to expect from the bespoke process.

The Benefits of Bespoke

Personality - Bespoke allows you to be unapologetically yourself on your wedding day! Our bridal wear is designed to be a perfect reflection of your own style, capturing the very essence of what makes you you and letting your personality shine through.

Experience - The whole process of having your wedding outfit designed and created especially for you is an exciting and personal collaborative journey, where you will be made to feel valued and special while being involved in every step of its creation.

Control - Bespoke gives you control over every aspect of the design of your bridal look. That might seem daunting to some, but rest assured, you will have our expertise on hand to advise and guide you through the whole process.

Personalisation - Often brides want to add personal touches to their bridal look, such as embroidered details or family heirlooms and vintage fabrics. Having a bespoke gown gives you the opportunity to do just that.

Fit - Bespoke pieces are made to your precise measurements. Meaning that you end up with a garment that fits like a glove, eliminating any need for expensive alterations.

Confidence – At Dandelions & Pearls we’re not here to tell anyone what they should or shouldn’t be wearing based on their body type, or anything else for that matter. Our aim is to empower our brides to wear whatever the hell they want on their wedding day. However, we also know that lots of us have insecurities or feel that there are styles that just don’t suit us. Having a gown designed specifically for you which is sculpted to your individual body measurements can accentuate your favourite assets, whilst minimising those bits that you might not be so keen on, so when it comes to your big day, you’ll feel your most confident, beautiful self.

The Bespoke Process

Design Consultation

Your bespoke journey will begin with an initial design consultation, either in person at our Cockington Court studio, or virtually over a zoom meeting. During this time, we love getting to know all about you and your plans for your wedding. We ask our brides to come prepared with some visuals to help communicate their vision. Or even better, a mood board! Pinterest is the perfect tool to help communicate your style, personality and aspirations for your bridal look.

If you visit us at our studio, you’ll have the opportunity to try on a range of our bridal wear samples. This can help to give you an idea of what you like what suits you. Any of our designs can be customised to your liking. You can take a bodice from one dress and combine it with sleeves from another and skirt of another, resulting in a dress that’s totally unique to you.

Next, you’ll be asked to choose the fabric for your gown. We have an extensive selection of samples from a handful of UK suppliers for you to browse. From exquisite laces and modern embroideries, to frothy tulles and sumptuous silks, not to mention a range of eco fabrics for all our environmentally conscious brides.

At the end of your consultation, I’ll produce a range of sketches translating everything that we’ve discussed which you’ll be able to take home as a keepsake.

Fittings

When you’ve decided on your design, we will produce a toile to check the proportions and fit of your gown. This is basically a prototype of your design, produced in a calico fabric. You’ll be invited to attend at least one toile fitting which will be an exciting opportunity for you to see your design starting to take shape. During your toile fitting you’ll be able to make tweaks to the design and we will make adjustments to the pattern to achieve a perfect fit.

You’ll usually be asked to attend another 2/3 fittings at various stages during the production of your design so that we can perfect the fit. During these fittings you’ll be asked to bring along the underwear and shoes that you intend to wear on your big day.

Timescale

The production of a bespoke gown can take anywhere between 30 to 100+ hours to complete. This is usually done over a range of 6-9 months. However, if you are planning to marry during peak season, it’s advisable to book 12 months in advance to ensure a place in our busy schedule.

Cost

Our bespoke bridal wear starts from £900, with the average cost around £1500.

This cost varies depending on the complexity of your design, fabric choices and amount of embellishments. For this reason, it’s essential to have a budget in mind when you attend your initial consultation. We will always do what we can to work within a smaller budget, so having a ballpark figure to work with will allow us to suggest materials and finishes tailored to your price range.
